Jon Fitch vs Johny Hendricks

Jon Fitch vs Johny Hendricks 300x200 UFC 141 Jon Fitch Suffers One Punch KnockoutWith the UFC being increasingly strict, getting videos that last of Friday nights UFC 141 show is not straightforawrd, certainly ones you can embed. So I’m almost overjoyed to have this link of Jon Fitch against Johny Hendricks from UFC 141, the last of 2011. With GSP out for some time I was expecting Jon Fitch to dominate the welterweight division. But as is often the case with MMA there was a surprise in store and a very quick one.

But amazingly I found the embed code

One Punch Knockout

A TKO after 12 seconds or whatever is spectacular and the left hand shot from Hendricks was right on the Jon Fitch button! It really was the first punch Hendricks threw, amazing!  On the way down Jon Fitch looks out but is coherent moments later after the ref stopped the fight. The way Fitch handled the ref suggests that he was in fine fettle and could have continued. Was it too early? It’s a matter of opinion and while I am no fan of early stoppages the UFC has to direct it’s refs to err on the side of caution. The sport is in it’s infancy and any devastating injury to a fighter could prove fatal in the quest for Zuffa World domination.

Seriously, the fighters do have to be protected. I am sure Jon Fitch thought it was too early as would Fedor against Henderson and it does detract from the spectacle, there is nothing better than watching someone dominated or on the brink of defeat come back and win. It was a good punch though and it leaves Jon Fitch back at square one, again.

I watched the final preliminary fight on Facebook; Korean Dong Hyun Kim against Canadian Sean Pierson which went to decision but was very interesting for more success with the jump front kick  or crane kick as the commentators call it. I think the Korean deserved the win in that fight and the crane kicking attempts were good but his excellent hip toss and recovery by his opponent were the most skillful exchange in the fight. Pierson does well to hang on despite being thrown on his head.

Overeem Batters Brock Lesnar

Then there’s the UFC 141 main event when as predicted Overeem overcame an out of sorts Lesnar. I’m no Lesnar fan, in fact, I do enjoy watching him get battered, Cain Velasquez did a good job as Carwin almost did and now Overeem has also done, but after so long out it was always going to be difficult.

Now Lesnar retires and it’s a shame because we don’t get to see Junior dos Santos sort him out. Lesnar is clearly a very high level wrestler but against a kickboxer of Overeem’s ability his primitive stand-up was always going to struggle. Once his size advantage is taken away he is no good unless he takes the guy down. Against Mir where at least he was competing in the same ball park, both favour the ground, he had a chance and did indeed beat Mir. However, with such average stand-up he fails consistently against the bigger guys who he cannot take to the floor. Now for Overeem against Junior, now there’s something to get excited about!
