The training involves most of the stuff discussed on this blog. This includes learning to punch powerfully with a whipping action as well as using the body to power punches as with the Superfrau punch, maintaining a connection so that force is transferred to the target. As with punches, kicks are powered with a whipping action and start at the feet and use the waist to throw the leg at the target.
In addition we need to learn close range punches, so we can beat the opponent to the punch and generate force at very close range. Then we introduce clinch work and groundfighting with submissions too and takedown attack and defence. We then use Boxing defence lessons to get comfortable with being punched, in a very safe way, building up the intensity slowly, progressing to kick defence too.
Moving well is a key component and is a major part of training at Epic whether for adults or kids. We use drills with a multiple attacker situation in mind to help get the feet working properly amongst others. Then we ensure that we are loaded and ready to hit from all manner of positions, static and moving.
There’s more to it than that but the above is a bit of an outline of what to expect. You won’t get ippon kumite, that’s been binned along with the kata, other than a little sanchin, which is referred to rather than practiced as a kata but with useful elements utilised. Training is imaginative and lateral not literal drawing from many areas to progress, standing still is no good!
